Clay Erotes and fusional Thánatoses.
Miwa Kyûsetsu XII’s subversive ceramic art: the artist, a contemporary Japanese ceramist, under his touch, clays become organic and alive.
The exhibition offers some hundred pieces reflecting 40 years of potter Miwa Kyûsetsu XII’s work, amongst which some of monumental size such as “Breath of the Dragon flying in white clouds” (1995) or “Himiko’s Calligraphies” (2nd series) (1992).
Brought together, theses powerful and original creations reveal the opposition between two extremes: on one hand, a Eros in quest of truth and aspiring to the height of beauty, and on the other hand, a Thánatos embodying suffering, if not death – an expressive duality which will without a doubt touch the visitor.
The exhibition demonstrates the power of Miwa Kyûsetsu’s art and reveals the shock wave the artist never ceased to cause during his career in the Japanese art world.
