On Every New Shadow
Small
islands floating in the air, Lee Bul’s crystal and
aluminium sculptures at the Fondation Cartier compose an
complex and sensual installation. They are a prolongation of the material
and conceptual structure of Jean Nouvel’s building
and create a dark and spellbinding atmosphere. These diaphanous structures
made of pearls, reflects, and metal similar to lace are raised above the
audience who can fully appreciate them thanks to clever sets of mirrors.
Lightness of volumes is the main thread of this project referring to the
visionary German architect Bruno Taut (1880 – 1938)
and his phantasmagorical Glashaus (a glass pavilion built
for the 1914 Cologne Exhibition). Lee Bul appropriates
the creative energy of Taut’s work and his enthusiasm for glass: she
presents at the same time the worlds of dream and reality without opposing
them. Also she doesn’t hesitate to address political issues at the
core of her life, such as dictatorship and torture.
